Did my second shift at The Soup Kitchen today with a friend from work. I really enjoy doing it. It’s nice to meet the people who go there and to dispel any preconceived ideas you may have about them. Granted there are the people who perhaps may not have made the best choices in life; but there are also the people who are trying to find work but can’t, a guy who used to be in the army, people who do work but don’t earn enough to feed themselves sometimes and I think maybe a couple of people are just lonely and want some company.
Everyone that comes in is very polite and appreciative of the work that goes in to keeping The Soup Kitchen running. They are all friendly. They are all easy to chat with too.
I’m glad I’ve started doing it and have gotten to see a side of these people that not necessarily everyone else gets to see.
Some of them are pretty damn funny too and have us laughing a lot. I’ve also noticed how positive and upbeat they all are. I’m sure if I found myself in a similar situation, I wouldn’t have the same attitude as a lot of them.
I’m looking forward to my next shift. Yes it’s an eye opener into how some people have to live, it also puts your own life into perspective and makes you more appreciative of the things you may take for granted.
